MLK Reflection: Letter from Birmingham Jail

As the observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 17th, draws closer, we invite you to prepare for this day by reading his Letter from Birmingham Jail.

Published in 1963 in The Atlantic under the title, “The Negro is Your Brother,” this letter is written to white moderate clergy who had called for Martin Luther King, Jr. to change his tone and approach.

This letter is believed to be an increasingly timeless document and is considered a place of prominence in our denominational conscience, including possible inclusion in our Book of Confessions.

We invite you to consider this MLK Day as the season to read this letter again or for the first time.

Additionally, because we Presbyterians believe in the greater opportunity for engagement afforded by communal discernment and action, we invite you to read this letter with your families, congregations, and colleagues.

To further the conversation, we are also hosting a Zoom gathering to reflect on the letter on Monday, January 17th at 7:00 p.m. You are invited to join us, along with members of our task force who will facilitate our discussion.
